New Project Announced

May 14th, 2009

ThirtyTwelve Studios has spent much of the last few years researching prospective projects in which to involve itself.  It is with great pride that we announce the start of  the P2a project that help adult basic education facilities track data for both NRS reporting and for internal evaluation.  Though the idea is not new, this implementation will be more thorough, secure, and developer friendly.  It has also been decided to develop this application under an Open Source License so that it can freely be enhanced by third parties while keeping the core components under the watchful eye of ThirtyTwelve.   It is our hope that the software will be adopted nationally, allowing for a unified data system. Benefits of a unified data system would be seen in cost savings in development, installation, and training for local, state and federal agencies.

Though cost is not the most important benefit of this project, it is usually the first question that governmental or non-profit agencies have to answer.  With ThirtyTwelve Studios investing in the core developement and delivering a fully functional application via an Open Source License, agencies have no development cost to incur.  Agencies with qualified technical staff save even more by installing and configuring the application in-house.  With the open source model, any changes made to the orignal application must be shared with the entire community.  This means that Agency A, with technical staff, enhances the applicaton with a particular add-0n, Agency B, with no technical staff, can take advantage of the new add-on without incurring any development costs.

One of our main goals for this project is not just to develop a great application to be used by a large number of agencies, but to harness the knowledge and expertise of educators, technical staff and administrators into a community of professionals working to meet educational standards while using community enhanced systems.  To build such a community, we need an open architecture that allows the system to be freely enhanced without the burden of dealing with proprietary systems that require more costs when changes are needed.  It also helps that that community has a interest in the system it helps to build.  Where a proprietary system developer is interested in profit, the community behind the development of this project has a more intimate attachment to the project outcome.  It is ThirtyTwelve Studio’s desire to see that the core application components of this project remain free and open and guided by the community.  We believe that it is in the best interest of the community of educators, technical staff and administrators that this project be guided by them and not political or corporate agendas.

We will be updating you with progress on this project as announcements are available.  If you have any questions about this project, please don’t hesitate to email me.
